J.Williams & Co. Ltd  - "architects impression"

Established in Wanganui by James Williams in 1903. James was a watchmaker who set up his first business in Waipawa and moved to Wanganui from the Hawkes Bay. His first Wanganui shop was opposite where Farmers Home Store is now formerly the Catholic Church. In 1905 he moved to the old Hannah's building opposite his soon to be erected new premesis. This opened in 1912 and J. Williams and Co Jewellery have been there ever since. Today they still operate with many of the original cabinets, fittings and chandeliers giving a unique atmoshpere. James died in 1948, his son Joe took over the business. In the early 1960's Miss Wanda Williams, daughter of Joe, returned from London due to her father's ill health and eventually took over until she sold the business in 1991 to the current owner local manufacturing jeweller Philip Sell. Philip moved his manufacturing business that was in the AA building, upstairs at J. Williams premises, giving the shop the best of both worlds. Qualified tradesmen on the premesis and a large selection of quality jewellary and specialty gift lines. A place where you can shop in the old world charm of a traditional jewellers. Philip believes in the principles that have served the business well over the last 100 years. Quality at an affordable price.

J William's remained in the family until purchased by Philip Sell in 1991. With a trade certificate in Manufacturing Jewellery, Philip has been in the trade for over 35 years and has trained three apprentices. Philip is joined at the bench by Samantha Hannah. Sam served her apprenticeship at J. Williams which she completed in 2005, and gained a certificate in manufacturing jewellery in 2006. With Philip's experience and Sam's fresh, young, vibrant approach they combine to create beautiful jewellery.
